Stroke is the third leading cause of death in Kentucky. Also called "brain attack," stroke is a medical emergency as serious as a heart attack.

Our stroke specialists are available 24 hours a day to treat stroke immediately, using the latest technology and clot-busting drugs to treat strokes before they cause brain damage.

Call 911 immediately if you or someone around you may be having a stroke

When a stroke occurs, time lost is brain lost. The UK Stroke Center is recognized as the leading center for the management of stroke, specializing in the treatment of all strokes from simple to complex. By combining nationally recognized stroke doctors and specially trained nurses and therapists with advanced medical technology, we provide our patients truly comprehensive and committed care that is second to none.

Schedule a stroke screening for your community event!

The UK Stroke Program screens hundreds of individuals each year. If you are planning a community event and would like to offer a stroke risk screening, please complete the request form and e-mail it to Lisa Bellamy.

General Information

Our comprehensive stroke program is a key part of the Kentucky Neurosciences Institute. There is a dedicated, JCAHO certified inpatient stroke unit at the Chandler Medical Center. Our stroke service is staffed full-time by our talented vascular neurologists. Leading-edge treatments for ischemic stroke that we can offer include intravenous thrombolysis, intra-arterial thrombolysis, and the endovascular Merci® Retrieval System. We also offer clinical trials for eligible stroke patients.

The Cerebrovascular Disorder Clinic is part of the comprehensive stroke program at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. The clinic evaluates patients with stroke or transient ischemic attack and those with a history of stroke risk factors. Several state-of-the-art clinical trials for secondary stroke prevention are available for our patients.

Leading-edge Care

Stroke patients at the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute have access not only to the region's top doctors, but also to the most advanced medical technology. KNI was the first health care center in the region to offer the Merci® Retrieval System, a leading-edge tool for removing potentially lethal blood clots in the brain.

Stroke Program Facilities:

The UK Stroke Center offers a dedicated 20-bed stroke unit in Pavilion A of UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital. At nearly 300 square feet, every private room has zones for the patient, caregiver and family. Room around the patient's bed accomodates equipment, including a computer for in-room charting so caregivers can spend more time at the bedside, working together as a team.
